I had been several times in the Allgäu for mixed and ice climbing, but never for sports climbing. Thinking about sport climbing destinations around Germany, it would have been pretty low on the list of possible locations. Climbing a weekend at some crags around Sonthofen surprised me in a positive way …

Grown up in this region, Caro had the idea to check out some local crags and me, always excited to discover some new spots, liked the idea pretty fast. Together with some friends from Karlsruhe – Gaby and Konstantin – we visited a small crag near Bad Hindelang called ‚Weihar‘. It provides routes in lower grades up to 7c. (There are even harder routes, but most of them are not natural and may not worth a visit.) The wall is pretty high and the routes are fun to climb. The view on the Alpine landscape makes it a nice place to be. Located in a small forest, it is even comfortable to climb with higher temperature in the summer.
We spent our second day at a crag called ‚Neues Tiefenbach‘. The limestone rock here was much more compact than in ‚Weihar‘ and it provides a lot of hard routes up to 8c. The wall looked really stunning. There are also some easier routes, but you have to search for them. Sadly, it rained in the afternoon and the only harder route I tried was an 8a. But these long, vertical routes looked so cool that I am looking forward to coming back and to give them a try …
