How many different climbing spots in Germany do you know? – Probably a few dozen and so do I. But still, I am surprised again and again, how many climbing areas here are in Germany and that there are still new locations to discover. Last weekend, we explored the impressive granite towers of the Fichtelgebirge in East Bavaria with the DAV rock climbing team ‚FelskaderBW‘.

Recently the DAV rock climbing team was nominated again for the upcoming two years. I am really thankful that I got the unique opportunity to be a part of this team for another periode. This team enabled me some outstanding climbing trips and contact with some awesome climbers and good friends. I am really excited about the upcoming two years …

This team trip to the granite towers of the Fichtelgebirge in East Bavaria was the first trip with the new formatted team and promised a perfect mixture of adventure and relaxed trad climbing. It was also the first time for me that I visited the Fichtelgebirge and I was pretty impressed by these isolated granite towers. This area offers a lot of routes in lower grades and is mostly well protected even though some routes require the use of trad gear.

It is located near the Frankenjura and perfect for some days of relaxed adventure climbing after pushing hard in Franken. The best time to climb there is probably late spring or early autumn. It is located pretty high and there was even snow when we visited in the early spring. It was so cold that it was snowing and we switched to climbing in the lower located Frankenjura on our second day.

On our second day, we spent our time in the Bärenschlucht near Pottenstein in the Frankenjura. It’s a super area with a lot of harder routes, but normally it is too sunny or too crowded. But this time, we were nearly the only ones and it was just perfect. I completed this weekend with a flash of ‚Bärentöter‘ [7c+] which is a quite nice route there …

I am looking forward to the climbing season in Franken – in the last years, I rarely came to Franken, but I am definitely psyched for more …
